This week I learnt that The hottest planet isn’t closest to the sun. Many people know that Mercury is the closest planet to the sun, well less than half of the Earth’s distance. It is no mystery, therefore, why people would assume that Mercury is the hottest planet. We know that Venus, the second planet away from the sun, is on the average 30 million miles farther from the sun than Mercury. The natural assumption is that being farther away, it must be cooler. But assumptions can be dangerous. For practical consideration, Mercury has no atmosphere, no warming blanket to help it maintain the sun’s heat. Venus, on the other hand, is shrouded by an unexpectedly thick atmosphere, about 100 times thicker than our own on Earth. This in itself would normally serve to prevent some of the sun’s energy from escaping back into space and thus raise the overall temperature of the planet. But in addition to the atmosphere’s thickness, it is composed almost entirely of carbon dioxide, a potent greenhouse gas. The carbon dioxide freely lets solar energy in, but is far less transparent to the longer wavelength radiation emitted by the heated surface. Thus the temperature rises to a level far above what would be expected, making it the hottest planet. In fact the average temperature on Venus is about 875 degrees F, hot enough to melt tin and lead. The maximum temperature on Mercury, the planet closer to the sun, is about 800 degrees F. In addition, the lack of atmosphere causes Mercury’s surface temperature to vary by hundreds of degrees, whereas the thick mantle of carbon dioxide keeps the surface temperature of Venus steady, hardly varying at all, anywhere on the planet or any time of day or night!

Hi guys this is some stuff you can do in the holidays if you are boared.

Main Star Create a Gift

I made a lantern out of an old sprite can.  Firstly I filled the cans up with water then put them in the freezer.  Secondly I took them out of the freezer and put marks where I would cut them.  Then I cut them with my sharp knife.  Then I went inside and filled the bath sink up with hot water to melt the ice.  Once this was done I pushed down on the can to make it look like a lantern effect.  Then I put wire through the can tab to make it hang.  Then I put candles in each one.  Then I lit them.

A Passion Project is something that you don't know lots about.  

I am doing it on the solar system.  

I have learnt that the edge of the Solar System is 1000 times further away from the sun than what Pluto is.  

I'm going to present this on a google site.

My favourite Christmas meal is trifle

I made it like this.

Fill kettle and boil it.

Get bowl and break sponge into the bowl.

Open, drain and pour fruit over sponge.

Now make jelly and pour over sponge.

Once jelly has set pour custard and decorate with cream and fresh fruit.

Last week I learnt how to create a bush shelter at Kaharangi Lodge for cubs. To make the shelter we used flax, ferns, trees that had been blown down by the wind, pungas and fern fronds to keep the rain out.

Here is a photo of us making the bush shelter.  I am wearing the ridgeline pants and jersery with the corona hat.

Last week class we watched 5 minute animation "Dream Giver" then we created a describe bubble on it. This included doing, number, size, colour, positon, shape and texture. We do a describe bubble so we can write a narrative about the topic. I worked well with Alex Double on this project and we completed almost all of the task.

Main Star Community clean up

On Thursday at Cubs I helped cleaning up the bike trail from the Scouts Hall to Top 10 Holiday park and then we went back on the beach.  We filled 2 black rubbish bags with rubbish.

Random Tuesday Descriptive Writing

The bath is all mucky and dirty on the out side of thr bath the tap is all rusty but thr inside is all clean so some one can have a bath there is wooden stables that have a slight curve so the bath is not touching the ground. The cabnet is tall with loads of lanterns in it so you can see in the night there is house lights hanging froom the top of the roof so the place look nice. There is plane grey bricks so it  is not soft so the bath and the cabnet can't sink. The green leafs are good because it is secret and the rain can't get in if it is wet.

This week in literacy I completed my illustrator sheet for Miss Lee.

The books name is Tropical Beach Resort and what we had to do was draw a picture and write below it what part of the book the picture is from.

I did this with Corbin but we each had our own seperate sheet. Corbin also finsihed the task he was given.

Main Star Christmas in France

I have chosen France to research how they celebrate Christmas.

I have found facts about what they do around Christmas time.

Firstly I’ll tell you about the French decorations.

Traditionally French Christmas trees were decorated with apples, paper, flowers and ribbons. They became popular in more regions of France in the late 1830’s.

Another traditional item used in French homes is the Mistletoe. It is usually meant to hang in front of your door but some people put it beside their fire. People say it brings you good fortune if you hang it in front of your door.

Now we are going to go onto something more tastier - French Christmas Food. A traditional French Christmas will usually include: smoked salmon and oysters with bran bread and (real) butter, foie gras (goose or duck liver pate), goose, capon or turkey stuffed with chestnuts and served with vegetables like green beans cooked with garlic and butter and provincial herbs sautéed potatoes.  The Christmas feast ends with “La bûche de Noël” (Yule log) – a sponge cake decorated like a yule log, traditionally made of chocolate and chestnuts.

On Christmas Eve small children from France put their shoes in front of the fireplace in the hopes that Père Noël Father Christmas will fill them with gifts. If the household is made of older children, there is no need to wait until December 25th to unwrap the gifts! Usually, the kids will start unwrapping at 12 am sharp on Christmas Eve.

If you were wondering what the weather is like I can give you a clue it is very white and very cold.

This week in numeracy we created a floorplan of our classroom.
In doing this I learnt about the correct directions in relation to north.

This week kyle went as a darlik for book day.
He made his own costume out of cardboard boxes, gold paint & even ice cream cones on the head.
